Andrew’s tax law experience

Andrew has an unusually broad knowledge in the area of taxation law, based on a diversity of professional experience over the past 27 years.

Academic and professional qualifications in tax

Andrew holds Bachelor degrees in Commerce and Law from Adelaide University, as well as a Masters of Law (in Taxation and International Law) from Melbourne University. He is admitted to practice law in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Andrew is a long-standing Chartered Tax Adviser with the Taxation Institute of Australia (TIA), a Fellow of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP), and a member of the Law Societies of NSW and SA.

Previous professional experience in tax

Andrew has worked as a tax accountant (with a Big 4 firm), as a merchant banker (in structured finance with Macquarie Bank), and as a lawyer (in national and international practices in Australia and the United Kingdom).

In the early part of his career Andrew practiced law at the big end of town, as a tax specialist with an emphasis on corporate and international tax laws, (gaining experience in transactions impacting UK, US and Asian jurisdictions). He has also acted for the SA and NSW state governments (and instrumentalities) and several infrastructure funds, on structuring asset transactions (in ports, rail, regional infrastructure and asset fleets).

Andrew has been advising on, writing about and presenting on superannuation laws since 1993. This enables him to bring a long-term perspective to the constant flow of change in this area. He is able to quickly identify the real threats and opportunities from new legislation and rulings, and provide you with a conservative path forward.

Experience dealing with the Tax Office

Andrew has been acting for taxpayers in reviews, audits and disputes with state and federal governments for over 20 years. He has an enviable track record in achieving commercially sensible outcomes, across the full spectrum of taxes, (including income tax, CGT, GST, FBT, stamp duty, land tax and payroll tax).

Andrew starts with a highly technical analysis of your position, and gives you an honest and straight-forward appraisal of your chances of success. He then provides actionable strategies for settling or advancing your position.

Andrew has represented taxpayers at all relevant levels of tribunals and courts. Over the past 5 years alone he has successfully represented taxpayers with disputed taxes of over $130 million. Andrew regularly represents taxpayers in face-to-face reviews, voluntary disclosure and settlement meetings with the Tax Office, where his well-informed, strong but non-confrontational approach meets with consistent success.

How do you appoint someone to make health or medical treatment decisions on your behalf in NSW?

As part of your end of life plan it is a good idea to appoint someone to make health or medical treatment decisions for you, if you become unable to make such decisions for yourself. It is also important to identify what your values, life goals and preferred outcomes are so the person appointed to make those health and medical treatment decisions can ensure their decision making is in line with your wishes.
